Drink Craft Beer Springfest in Boston

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Beer Events, Drinks, Festivals, Food Events | Posted on 06-04-2014

We here at Party Travel Hotspots’ Boston Lowdown have a great appreciation for the art of brewing and drinking beer, and the Drink Craft Beer Spring Fest going down in Beantown this Friday, April 11th, and Saturday, April 12th, at Space 57 on Stuart Street, is the type of event which is right up our alley.

American beer culture has long celebrated the bitter goodness provided by hops, and as springtime is the time of year when hops start their growing season, what better time to have a beer festival focusing on hops than in early Spring? That is just the idea for the festival, but don’t just expect a bunch of hop-heavy IPAs, as participating breweries will be bringing plenty of alternative but still hop-laden brews for your drinking pleasure.

Aside from the Springtime hops focus, another thing that will make this festival unique is that it will center around local New England breweries, many of which very small and not yet widely distributed. Among the breweries you can expect will be bigger names such as Clown Shoes, Peak Organic, and Samuel Adams, in addition to smaller upstarts such as Wormtown, Urban Farm Fermentory, Mystic Brewery, and many more.

There has to be some good food at any brew festival, as the heavy drinking participants will certainly need something to soak up the alcohol, and there will be some great local food vendors on hand of the likes of Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Grillo’s Pickles, and more.

VIP tickets and general admission tickets will be available, and certain special beers from all of the participating breweries will be available only to VIPs, meaning it may be worth your while to shell out the extra cash for the exclusive tastings.

For more information on the festival and purchase tickets, please check out the official website.

Taste of Chocolate Festival This Weekend

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Festivals, Food Events | Posted on 20-01-2014

The fact of the matter is that you would be hard-pressed to find an individual that does not enjoy chocolate. It is pretty much regarded as one of the most universal pleasures known to human-kind, and we here at Party Travel Hotspots’ Boston Lowdown are all about the epicurean delights. For this reason, the Taste of Chocolate Festival going down in Harvard Square this weekend, January 24-26, is the type of event we would be quite remiss not to cover.

You may wonder exactly what to expect, and we are here to give you the skinny (or should we say the fat!) on the delicious proceedings. From Friday through Sunday, the excellent restaurants and cafés on Harvard Square will be serving up chocolate-based cocktails, cordials, appetizers, entrees, and of course desserts, and retailers on the square will also be selling plenty of chocolate goodies. Not only will a veritable smorgasbord of fine chocolate be on display, but you can anticipate some good deals as well.

There will also be a centralized sampling of chocolate from local purveyors going on from 1 PM to 2 PM on Saturday on Deguglielmo Plaza, right in front of Hidden Sweets. In addition to the plethora of tasty cocoa treats, you can also expect live entertainment and a festive atmosphere on the Square throughout the weekend. Chocolate-lovers in Boston will definitely not want to miss this opportunity to celebrate one of the better things in life.

Neutral Milk Hotel Next Thursday at Orpheum

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Music Events, Nightlife | Posted on 09-01-2014

If you know anything about indie music, you will know that Neutral Milk Hotel pretty much epitomize the rise of the genre in the 1990s. Their critically acclaimed seminal release, 1998’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is considered a certified indie classic. Neutral Milk Hotel will be performing at the Orpheum Theatre this Thursday, January 16th, and this is a show you will not want to miss if you are an indie-head in the Boston area.

Athens, GA’s Neutral Milk Hotel is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Jeff Mangum, who went on a long hiatus of over 10 years at the peak of the band’s success, making the group somewhat of a thing of mystery and legend. Mangum recently came out of hiding, and the band lineup which is responsible for their aforementioned classic album is backing him up for the triumphant return of Neutral Milk Hotel to stages worldwide. Considering Mangum’s fickle history, you never know when you might get the opportunity to see this paramount indie band perform again, making this an all the more can’t-miss show you will definitely want to check out if you love the band or appreciate indie music in general.

Common at HOB Boston Dec. 26th

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Music Events | Posted on 24-12-2013

Nowadays, many people may know Common more as an actor than a rapper, but the Chicago emcee earned his stripes long ago as one of the best to ever touch a mic. With classic albums, multiple radio and video hits, an appearance at the White House, and a good many collaborations with the top artists in the industry all under his belt, Common is one of the most notable hip-hop artists of all time.

As previously mentioned, Common has been very busy pursuing his thespian interests of late, meaning the opportunity to see Common live is not as common (no pun intended) as it may once have been. This makes his appearance at the House of Blues in Boston this Thursday, December 26th all the more special and one you will not want to miss.

Doors open at 7:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00. Tickets, which can be purchased here, run from $36 to $49.50. If you appreciate great hip-hop, or simply love great music in general and live in the Boston area, you will want to take advantage of this opportunity to see one of the greats of our time in concert.

“A John Waters Christmas” on December 15th

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Holiday Events, Uncategorized | Posted on 13-12-2013

If you like to celebrate your Christmas in a manner which could be considered, shall we say, a bit off-color, we have just the event for you this Sunday, December 15 as “A John Waters Christmas” hits the  Berklee Performance Center at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.

You may be familiar with Waters from his  cult classic films such as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and A Dirty Shame, and these should give you some idea of what to expect from the Christmas monologue performance he will put on this Sunday.

Waters is known to be obsessed with Christmas, hence his reason for doing a monologue tour dedicated to the holiday, although his take on it is definitely far from what people normally associate with a wholesome concept of the yuletide season. Waters’ Christmas monologue performances, which are praised by critics and fans alike, focus on the perverted side of gift-giving, Waters’ rather bizarrely extreme interest in Santa Claus, and his enjoyment of crime-oriented tales of Xmas gone horribly wrong.

Tickets run from $25 – $100, and can be purchased here. The show starts at 8 PM. Celebrate the more lewd and edgy side of the holidays this year with a true legend in film in John Waters, and you will be sure to not leave disappointed.
